9 Historical Fiction Books Worth Reading This Spooky Season
If you love historical fiction but want something a little darker for October, this list is for you. I’ve chosen books that mix fascinating historical settings with gothic houses, witches, ghosts, mysteries, and stories that feel just unsettling enough for the season.
I love adding atmospheric historical fiction to my fall reading list. If I am not in the mood for full-on horror books, these are just perfect. You still get that eerie, spooky feeling, but with the rich settings and characters that make historical fiction so easy to get lost in.
So if you’re building your October TBR here are 9 historical fiction books worth adding to your list.
The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

Set after the Mexican War of Independence, The Hacienda follows Beatriz after she marries a wealthy man and moves to his countryside estate. She hopes the marriage will give her a safe home again. Instead, strange voices, visions, and secrets begin to haunt her. With no one willing to help, Beatriz turns to a young priest who knows more about witchcraft than anyone realizes.
Mexican Gothic meets Rebecca in this debut supernatural suspense novel, set in the aftermath of the Mexican War of Independence, about a remote house, a sinister haunting, and the woman pulled into their clutches…
In the overthrow of the Mexican government, Beatriz’s father is executed and her home destroyed. When handsome Don Rodolfo Solórzano proposes, Beatriz ignores the rumors surrounding his first wife’s sudden demise, choosing instead to seize the security his estate in the countryside provides. She will have her own home again, no matter the cost.
But Hacienda San Isidro is not the sanctuary she imagined.
When Rodolfo returns to work in the capital, visions and voices invade Beatriz’s sleep. The weight of invisible eyes follows her every move. Rodolfo’s sister, Juana, scoffs at Beatriz’s fears—but why does she refuse to enter the house at night? Why does the cook burn copal incense at the edge of the kitchen and mark its doorway with strange symbols? What really happened to the first Doña Solórzano?
Beatriz only knows two things for certain: Something is wrong with the hacienda. And no one there will help her.
Desperate for help, she clings to the young priest, Padre Andrés, as an ally. No ordinary priest, Andrés will have to rely on his skills as a witch to fight off the malevolent presence haunting the hacienda and protect the woman for whom he feels a powerful, forbidden attraction. But even he might not be enough to battle the darkness.
Far from a refuge, San Isidro may be Beatriz’s doom.

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

In The Once and Future Witches, three sisters reunite in New Salem in 1893. They become involved in the women’s suffrage movement while also discovering old forms of magic that many believed were gone forever. Soon, their fight for women’s rights becomes connected to something much more dangerous. This is a great pick if you want witches, history, and sisterhood.
In 1893, there’s no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.
But when the Eastwood sisters–James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna–join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women’s movement into the witch’s movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.
There’s no such thing as witches. But there will be.
