The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

The God of the Woods is a suspenseful mystery set in the Adirondacks in the 1970s. It begins when a teenage girl named Barbara vanishes from a summer camp in the middle of the night. Her disappearance stirs painful memories because years earlier, her older brother also went missing in the same area and was never found.
Soon we follow the investigation as police, camp counselors, and the girl’s wealthy family try to find out the truth. Each person has secrets. And even the camp itself hides a long history of darkness. I really loved the isolated setting of the woods. It creates a haunting atmosphere where danger always feels close.
The book shifts between perspectives, showing the lives of people who are connected to Barbara and her family. We also read about privilege, class, and the hidden lives of teenagers under pressure. This was my first book from Liz Moore and I really loved it. The book builds tension slowly, drawing you into a world of lies and half-truths.
The God of the Woods is a gripping mystery. You will love the shocking twists and secrets families keep. It was also one of the Goodreads choice awards nominees.

The Girl Who Was Taken begins with two teenage girls who vanish after a summer party. Megan is found alive in a hidden bunker, while Nicole is never seen again. A year later, Megan is famous because of her survival story, but Nicole’s sister Livia refuses to give up. Livia works in forensic pathology and finds her first clue when another body shows up. She turns to Megan for answers, but Megan remembers less than she admits in public. As the two women push deeper, more disappearances come to light, and the truth grows darker. I liked how the story moved between timelines and how the tension grew as each secret came out. You can’t be sure who to believe. The ending twist made me rethink the whole case and left me stunned. For me, it was one of those books where you think you’ve solved it, but then you realize you are completely wrong.

The Only One Left by Riley Sager

The Only One Left is one of the most atmospheric thrillers I’ve read. The story is set in 1983 inside a crumbling mansion called Hope’s End. Decades earlier, the whole Hope family was murdered, and the daughter, Lenora, was accused but never charged. Now she is old, mute, and in a wheelchair. Kit, a young nurse, comes to care for her after the last nurse mysteriously fled. Lenora can only communicate by typing on a typewriter. One night she offers to finally tell her side of the story. The chapters switch between Kit’s present and Lenora’s chilling account of the past. The gothic mansion adds so much tension. You are never sure if Kit is in danger or if Lenora is truly innocent. Such Quiet Girls by Noelle W. Ihli

Such Quiet Girls is terrifying because it feels so real. A group of children on a school bus are kidnapped along with their new bus driver, Jessa. They are locked in a shipping container underground, with only air and fear keeping them alive. Jessa already carries guilt from losing her own daughter years earlier. Now she must protect these kids, even as panic spreads. Sage, one of the girls, becomes central as the group tries to think of ways to survive. The kidnappers promise release when ransom is paid, but it feels like a lie. Every page is filled with the claustrophobic terror of running out of oxygen. I liked how the story gave both emotional depth and nonstop suspense. Inspired by real crimes, it’s even scarier to imagine.
