Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy

Wild Dark Shore takes place on a remote island near Antarctica, where Dominic Salt and his three children live alone, protecting a global seed bank. For some reason, the setting was harsh and beautiful at the same time. The cold, the storms, and the isolation are always present in the background. When a woman named Rowan washes ashore during a violent storm, the balance of their lives begins to shift. The best part about the book was The island. It feels alive, almost like another character. Some parts are so tense and gripping that it’s hard to stop reading, especially during the storms. This is one of the most immersive books I’ve read in 2025

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due

Set in 1950s Jim Crow Florida, The Reformatory follows twelve-year-old Robbie Stephens, who is sent to a brutal reform school after defending his sister. The school is frightening, violent, and deeply unjust. Robbie can see ghosts, and through them, the truth about what happens to the boys there slowly comes out.
This is a heavy book, both emotionally and in length, but it feels worth it. Some scenes are extremely sad and disturbing, and the cruelty feels real because it is rooted in true history. The bond between Robbie and his sister adds strength to the story. It is one of the most powerful historical fiction novels based on real events.

We Are All Guilty Here by Karin Slaughter

We Are All Guilty Here begins in a small town where two teenage girls disappear during a fireworks night. At first, the town feels familiar and safe, but that illusion breaks quickly. Officer Emmy Clifton is deeply connected to the case, and that personal guilt shapes how she approaches everything. It’s a slow-paced book that spends a lot of time building the town and its people. The focus is not just on the crime, but on secrets, silence, and how well people really know each other. Overall, it’s slow, detailed, and dark in a quiet way. If you’ve read Karin Slaughter before, this feels like her style at its most controlled and unsettling.

Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson

Jet Mason is told she will die within seven days due to a head injury. Instead of giving up, she decides to find out who tried to kill her. Not Quite Dead Yet follows her as she questions family members, old friends, and people she once trusted.
Jet is one of the strongest parts of the book. She feels determined, and very human. Even though the idea is dark, the book doesn’t feel depressing. The twists come quickly, but the emotional parts keeps it grounded. It’s a thriller that feels fast and engaging, but also surprisingly warm in places. This is one of the best thriller to read in 2026. Also check out : 5 Must-Read Nominees from the Goodreads Choice Awards

Too Old for This by Samantha Downing

Lottie Jones is a retired serial killer living a quiet, ordinary life. Her days are filled with bingo games and small-town routines. When a journalist starts asking questions about her past, Lottie realizes her peaceful life may fall apart.
Too Old for This is dark but funny. It’s strange how quickly you start rooting for Lottie, even knowing who she is. The humor is subtle, and the story feels different. I really loved the main character. She is sharp, clever, and oddly charming. The book moves through twists easily and never feels heavy. It’s addictive, surprising, and full of dark comedy that makes it hard to stop reading. This is one of the engaging audiobooks I’ve listened to in 2025

The Perfect Divorce by Jeneva Rose

This sequel brings Sarah Morgan back into the spotlight years after the events of The Perfect Marriage. Her life seems stable until a new betrayal triggers old secrets and new dangers. When a woman goes missing, everything becomes personal and messy.
The story is full of twists and turns. The characters are flawed, selfish, and complicated. The writing is direct and fast-moving. Compared to the first book, The Perfect Divorce feels even more dramatic and intense. It’s the kind of engaging thriller that pulls you in quickly and doesn’t slow down until the end. Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Set in the 1980s, Atmosphere follows Joan Goodwin, a physics professor chosen to train as one of the first women astronauts at NASA. The story focuses on her training, the pressure, and the relationships formed during this intense time.
The characters are introduced with very few words, yet they feel fully real almost instantly. Joan is strong and vulnerable all at once. The heart of the book is about ambition and belonging. It worked especially well as an audiobook. This is one of my favorite audiobooks by Julia Whelan. This is historical fiction with strong female characters and deep emotional clarity.

My Friends by Fredrik Backman

My Friends follows a group of teenagers who form a close bond during one important summer, and how that friendship affects lives many years later. I loved the main plot. It moves between timelines and centers around a painting that connects everything.
The writing is simple and emotional without trying too hard. There is humor mixed with sadness, and the friendships feel messy and real. The characters are easy to care about. It’s a story about connection, art, and growing up. One of those books that feels gentle but powerful, and gives you the best hangover.

Isola by Allegra Goodman

Inspired by a real historical figure, Isola follows Marguerite, a young woman abandoned on a frozen island. She is forced to survive with very little, far from everything she once knew.
The story focuses on survival, faith, and inner strength. I loved the writing. It was detailed and takes us to the slow passage of time and harsh conditions. Marguerite’s transformation feels believable. This is historical fiction that feels quiet but unforgettable. If you are looking for great novels centered on a woman who refuses to give up even when everything is taken from her, this book is for you. This is also one of the unforgettable books from Reese Witherspoon book club.
