Finding Me by Viola Davis

Narrated by : Viola Davis
Listening Length: 9 hours and 15 minutes

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever.

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world.

So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love.

For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be . . . you.

One of the best books read by the author, Finding Me is a memoir written by actress Viola Davis about her life as a underprivileged girl growing up in poverty.

The book starts with Davis seeing herself as a little girl who runs away from from her past.

She dedicates this book to anyone who struggle to find their own identify, struggle accept true self.

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Narrated by : Marin Ireland
Listening Length: 9 hours and 53 minutes

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them – the bank robber included – desperately crave some sort of rescue.

Portraying the story of a bank robbery, the book concentrates more on the people who become friends by accident during the incident.

Set in Sweden, the book makes us witness the journey of these “idiots”, their anxieties after a failed attempt along with how they finally realise that they have a lot more in common than they ever imagined.

One of the reasons I think Anxious People is better as audiobooks is the book narrator Marin Ireland.  The exhilarating narration takes the book into a whole new level.

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Narrated by : Rachel McAdams
Listening Length: 9 hours and 22 minutes

This heartwarming story has beckoned generations of readers into the special world of Green Gables, an old-fashioned farm outside a town called Avonlea. Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old orphan, has arrived in this verdant corner of Prince Edward Island only to discover that the Cuthberts—elderly Matthew and his stern sister, Marilla—want to adopt a boy, not a feisty redheaded girl. But before they can send her back, Anne—who simply must have more scope for her imagination and a real home—wins them over completely.

Canadian author L.M Montgomery’s classic novel is a coming-of-age story of an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who comes to live on the Cuthbert siblings farm. The Cuthbert siblings didn’t intend to adopt a girl, as they were looking for a boy to help them on the farm. Eventually, the talkative, imaginative and high spirited Anne makes her way through Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert lives.

Rachel McAdams narrates the novel with a cheerful and eloquent voice that complements the young Anne’s enthusiasm.

Which is obviously one of the many reasons to Anne of Green Gables is book that work well as audiobook. Listening to the audiobook is surely going to take you back to 19th century Prince Edward Island.

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Narrated by: Kate Winslet
Listening Length: 4 hours and 18 minutes

Matilda is a little girl who is far too good to be true. At age five-and-a-half she’s knocking off double-digit multiplication problems and blitz-reading Dickens. Even more remarkably, her classmates love her even though she’s a super-nerd and the teacher’s pet. But everything is not perfect in Matilda’s world. For starters, she has two of the most idiotic, self-centred parents who ever lived. Then there’s the large, busty nightmare of a school principal, Miss (“The”) Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who flings children at will and is approximately as sympathetic as a bulldozer.

Published in 1988, Matilda is one of the best children’s novels of all time. Matilda is born to self-centred parents who failed to recognize her intellect.

They had no clue that Matilda was able to read classics such as “Great Expectation” and “Jane Eye” at the age of four. But despite her troubled little world, young Matilda was smart and enthusiastic and loved her life.

This whimsical story is narrated by the Academy award-winning actress Kate Winslet!

Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then, Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal, and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family, and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: The twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it’s the truth.

Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose.

Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other – and stay cool – while also staying out of the way of Madison’s buttoned-up politician husband.

This is about two little children who occasionally burst into fire. Yes, actual fire. It’s not harmful to them. Despite this bizarre nature, they are not taken care of the way they are supposed to.

Their busy father keeps them away from the family and their mother is pretty much out of the picture. The story mostly explains how their mother’s high school friend Lilian, becomes their caretaker.
